Chapter 9 Discussion. First Ladies

Visit First Lady Michelle Obama’s homepage at http://www.whitehouse.gov/firstlady . Note that the text described Laura Bush as more of a traditional first lady who does not pursue and lobby for a serious policy agenda. Study Mrs Obama’s Web pages so you can compare her to Laura Bush. Assess how she is the same and/or different.

  1. After viewing Michelle Obama's web page, it would appear that she is taking a similar role that Laura Bush took. Laura Bush seemed to be active only in teaching the youth of America how to read and Michelle Obama seems to be very active in community service projects such as United We Serve. It appears that this goes back to her days at the University of Chicago where she was very active in community service as well. Though she is a lawyer, i could see her eventually taking on more responsibilities as President Obama's term goes on. Its still very early to tell, but I think we'll know more in a year or so. --Adam Wise

  2. Both Laura Bush and Michelle Obama were/are very active in their own policies. Laura Bush implemented many initiatives focused on health, education, and literacy. Michelle Obama seems to be focused on bringing working-class issues to the White House. She is promoting President Obama's health care iniative and is the face of the administration's United We Serve program.

Though it is still a little early to tell with Michelle Obama, I would agree that they both do a bit more than the traditional First Lady.

  3. After looking around Mrs. Obama's webpage I would have to say that she and Laura Bush are kind of on the same page as far as how active a First Lady they were/are. I do have to interject however that I expect Michelle Obama to take a much more active role in policy making than Laura Bush did. I think that by the end of the Obama administration we will liken Mrs. Obama closer to a Hillary Clinton (hopefully, without all the controversy)than a Laura Bush.

The previous First Lady Laura Bush was a very conservative first lady like First Lady Michelle Obama they are very kind and thoughtful ladies to hold the position as First Ladies. Laura Bush is the more traditional first lady. She didn’t allow her self to become extremely involve in her husband Presidency. First Lady Michelle Obama is very involved in her husband Presidency on the web page she encourage the citizens in the United States to get more involve in volunteering in their community. According to her web page I think in the future she will try to implement programs to help the community if she has not already began. Laura Bush was more to her self back she did not involve herself as much. She is does continue to keep herself involved in her children lives. First Lady Michelle Obama has a video clip about community service/volunteering and how we can make a different in our community. She is more involve at the beginning of her husband Presidency than Laura Bush did. First Lady Michelle Obama is out in the community trying to make a difference

Michelle Obama and Laura Bush seem to be share similar concerns. They both share the same interest in the regards of childrens education around the world and promote it every chance that they can. They also are very involved in community welfare and activism. Maybe Michelle more than Laura. I think that both women are involved in their husbands presidency, Michelle more outspoken than Laura was. Both put their role as "mom" before being first lady and seeing to it that their own children's lives are kept as out of the spotlight as possible. I believe that Laura Bush did more in womans rights and was involved with things that went on with or were connected to the military. Michelle Obama seems to be a more modern first lady, putting herself out there being more openly involved while Laura was a more traditional first lady, being involved, but maybe not as public about things and I believe their personalities shape their involvement, Laura being quiet and Michelle being more outgoing. Both seem to care very deeply about the issues they address. I think that they are both great ladies and that this is still the beginging for Michelle Obama, and it is still early for us to tell exactly what she will do as a first lady.

  6. Good observations all! I would agree that at this early point Michelle is more similar than different than Laura except for style -- the outgoing vs more reserved difference is perhaps the greatest difference. The other difference is that Michelle is playing the role of first mom in the White House with having small children (first children there since Kennedy), while Laura had teens (who proved to be handfuls in their own right). Younger children do require more time. Though Michelle is not terribly involved in policy in any formal way, she has staked out areas of children (which is traditional) and helping working families, a little less traditional. I agree with all of you that her background in law will eventually lead her into a more non-traditional rule as her family settles in. The other thing I think we will see is her playing more of a role in international affairs, somewhat like Hillary did but perhaps even moreso as people of color around the world relate to her. Bob B

  7. I agree with Wise, Laura was definitely more focused on simple literacy and education programs, as is Michelle Obama. Although I think Michelle has greater power than Mrs. Bush did, which should lead her into more responsibility as a politician in other areas of policy. Mrs. Obama, in my opinion, is much more of a celebrity type of woman, more so than any other recent First Ladies. I attribute that more to her age and the times more than anything. It would be a tragic mistake if she does not become more involved and more visible when promoting her husband’s agenda. I think she has just as much power as Barak does in pushing public opinion one way or another, especially among young and middle age women.
